Cross-Country Skiing in Gerlos

Away from the Pistes

If you are one of those people who love to swap wide downhill skis for their narrower cross-country cousins, you will find outstanding XC conditions here in Gerlos. As soon as snow conditions allow, from December until Easter you will be able to explore trails that are freshly groomed every day - both for classic style as well as fans of "skating" technique. In total, our winter arena encompasses 200 km of top-notch XC trails.

Here is a small selection of popular cross-country ski tours in and around Gerlos:

Trail: Innertal - Alpina - Schönachtal

Distance: ca. 6 km
Difficulty: easy

Route Description: This XC tour begins at the Oberwirt car park. The trail leads along the left bank of the stream in the direction of Innertal. We now glide past the power plant to an area known as "Funsingau". On the way back, our loop takes us over the wooden bridge (across from the Innertalerhof). We then make our way through an underpass and into Schönachtal. We now ski past the Schönachhof and then, on the opposite side of the Schönachbach, we again head back towards Gerlos and our original starting point.

Trail: Schönachtal – Stinkmoosalm

Distance: ca. 6 km
Difficulty: easy to moderate

Route Description: The starting point for this tour is again the car park at the Oberwirt. We begin by crossing the bridge over the Gerlosbach. The trail then takes us along the right bank of the stream to the entrance to Schönachtal valley. At the end of this XC trail, we have to walk briefly along a cleared hiking path to the valley interior. Once there, we can again clamp on our skis and continue along the "Stinkmoosalm" trail. The short interruption is worthwhile: for good reason, this beautiful XC trail is one of the most popular in Gerlos. Refreshment opportunity: at the end of the XC trail it's just a short, though rewarding walk to the Lackenalm country cafe.

Alpine Trail on the Gerlosplatte

Distance: ca. 7 km
Difficulty: moderate to difficult

Trail Description: On the Gerlosplatte (elev. 1640 m), you will find the highest cross-country ski trail in Hohe Tauern National Park. This circuit demands everything an XC skier has to give. But the effort is rewarded by fantastic panoramic views. Starting point: First take your car up to the Gerlosplatte. The trail begins next to Sporthotel Gerlosplatte. If you would like to rent skis, or perhaps even take part in cross-country lessons, you should definitely stop by Michi`s Ski School.

XC Skiing in Wald/Königsleiten

Distance: 7 km
Difficulty: easy

Route Description: The beautiful trail in Königsleiten also feeds into the over 200 km long Pinzgau Loipe. An absolute highlight is the almost 1 km long "Finkrunde" in Vorderkrimml. The section is floodlit and can be enjoyed until 9:30 at night.

Alpine Trail in Königsleiten

Distance: ca. 2.5 km

Route Description: Newly built alpine XC trail next to the Königsleiten mountain lift station. Cross-country skiing at 2,315 m – a truly special experience.
