Winter Hikes

Hiking in Snowy Gerlos

Take a walk through the snow-covered winter countryside surrounding Gerlos. Numerous winter hiking paths promise pure wintertime enjoyment, even without the need to clamp on a pair of skis. And since trudging through the snow is a rather strenuous activity, there are also a few traditional country inns and mountain huts along the way where you can step inside, warm up and enjoy a few refreshments. Here are a few of our favorite winter hiking paths.

Here are a few carefully selected winter hiking paths in and around Gerlos:

Winter Hikes in Schönachtal

This winter hike gets underway from Gasthof Oberwirt in Gerlos. We cross the stream at the bridge and follow the road to the left until we come to the entrance to Schönach valley. Here we begin a gentle climb along the winter hiking path. After a short walk we reach the Stinkmoosalm, from where we can enjoy beautiful views of the valley head including the Schönachkees glacier (3,000 m). Continuing along the same path, after about 1 hour we reach the Lackenalm, an excellent refreshment opportunity at 1400 m above sea level. We will return along the same route.

Actual walking time: ca. 2-3 hrs. (out and back)

Wimmertal

Across from Hotel Kröller in Gerlos Gmünd is the entrance to romantic Wimmertal valley. Beginning here is a short winter pathway. It climbs steeply for the first few meters, but continues relatively flat out to the Eggehtenalm. From there we make our way further into the valley as far as the "Wimmertalalm", where refreshments are available and we can enjoy magical views of the Wechselspitze and Mitterjoch.

Actual walking time: ca. 1-1.5 hrs.

Through snowy Krummbachtal

This winter hike takes us past the Isskogel valley station, along the road next to the Gerlosbach, out as far as the Gerlos sledding hill. The route then continues uphill to the left along a road leading to Gasthof Almstüberl. From here we can enjoy marvelous panoramas of the Schönach Valley. If we keep following this path, after some time we will cross the Krummbach piste. We now continue on the supply lane as far as the "Prölleralm" turn-off. Here we have to keep left, taking us on a climb lasting about 20 minutes until we finally come to a rustic ski hut with a large sun-terrace. If we wish to continue even further, the path leads us next to the stream for about 30 minutes, until we reach the Krummbachrast where well-deserved refreshments are available (incl. homemade cheeses)

Wildgerlostal

This winter hike begins at the Isskogel valley station. Our first stage takes us on the road alongside the Gerlosbach out to the sledding hill. Here we must turn right. If we follow this path, in 45 minutes we will come to the dam on Durlassboden reservoir. We can reach the top of the dam wall either by steps, or by following a narrow access road. Our efforts are rewarded with fantastic views out across the frozen waters of the reservoir. And afterwards, Restaurant Seestüberl is impossible to resist.

Schwarzachtal - Gerlos Gmünd

Following the banks of the Gerlosbach, we will walk from Gerlos to Gmünd and Hotel Kröller. Once at the hotel, we will cross the road, turning right towards Hotel Almhof. This path leads directly to a turn-off marked "Seemeile". We must now use caution as we make our way down to the dam wall. Once at the bottom, a path takes us to the right and Gasthof Kühle Rast. Continuing through a narrow stretch of forest, we slowly make our way uphill. Now we hike through romantic Schwarzach valley, coming after 1 hr. to the Schwarzachalm at almost 1400 m above sea level. After a brief stop for refreshments, we will again make our way downhill to Gerlos-Gmünd. Back at the bottom, we will need to cross the footbridge before passing some Western riding stables and returning to Hotel Kröller.
